The National Bicycle Registry of South Africa is a non-profit, community focused initiative for cyclists by cyclists. The Registry's prime objective is to reduce bike theft incidences which by some reports are "unacceptably high".
In the wake of growing technology and subsequent value of bicycles, bicycle theft for profit has become organized with very little risk of prosecution.
The Registry is of the belief that if a stolen bicycle cannot be sold then the motivation for stealing is diluted. By registering a bicycle's serial number against the owner's ID number we can, to a degree, control the sale of stolen bicycles. In addition, the Registry will in time act as a tool for law enforcement both inland and on our borders in the fight against crime in our country.
